So last week I discussed what public relations is and why the phrase pr friendly blogger is misleading. Today I thought I would quickly discuss advertising.
Everyone has been exposed to advertising- it is everywhere! From television commercials to magazine ads, newspapers, billboards, radio and coupons. We cannot in escape all advertising, no matter how hard we try. So what exactly is advertising? Wikipeida explains it best as "a form of communication used to encourage an audience to take action." An ad can be for a product, service, or event or maybe even a combination of all three!
How does advertising differ from public relations? First and foremost, advertising is a paid for spot. The company pays for the spot that their advertisement takes up as well as for the advertisement itself. The ad attempts to get the consumer to act - to buy their product, try out their service or to attend their event. Public relations will try to inform the consumer about similar events but without spending any money on a specific ad or spot. Usually public relations attempts to give the consumer an overall good feeling about their company/product/service/event. Yes, they hope that a call to action will occur as well but without all the catchy advertising slogans and fancy artwork!
Because money exchanges hands when some bloggers post about a specific product or company, I would definitely place this action in the advertising category rather than a public relations category. If a blogger writes about something (product, event, etc) without being paid but because they were sent a press release about it, then it is public relations.
So what are your thoughts? What are some ads that you have found to be great because they definitely did cause you to act? Have other ads made you not want to buy a product/service or attend an event? Let me know what you think!
