Thinking about getting a pet? Visit the shelter!

It was around this time of the year in 2011 that we made a very special addition to our family.  I had promised the kids for a couple of months that we would get another dog.  We all love our pug but she is attached to me.  She refuses to sleep with anyone else and if I am home, then she is close to me.  She also has a personality more suited to a cat.  She likes attention when she wants it, on her own terms, otherwise just leave her alone!

I searched through Craigslist looking for dogs people wanted to part with.  I responded to a few posts but usually never heard anything back from the people (or I called and left messages and they never called back).  Frustrated, I decided to go and look at our local shelter.  On my first trip oh what to my wondering eyes should appear but a full bred pug.  Seriously.  Since she had just been picked up, she wasn't available.  I couldn't help but wait for her.  The day she was available I arrived at the shelter 2 minutes after they opened and was the 3rd person waiting for the pug.  I believe she went to a very good home (I just am not sure if the older lady who adopted her could handle her though-- the pug got loose twice while she was filling out paperwork!).

Since the pug had found a good home, I went to see what other options there were.  There in a cage was this black beauty.  I asked if we could get her out and she crawled out and sat so nicely by my feet.  She had long black hair that curled.   I had fallen in love.  The employees wanted me to see another dog so they put the beauty back in the cage (she resisted but not in a bad way, she just didn't want to go back in).  The other dog was nice but I had fallen in love with the long haired beauty.  Back we went, got her out of the cage again and after finishing up all the paperwork we went home.  She sat quietly in the seat the entire time, hardly moving a muscle.

The kids absolutely feel in love with this gentle creature and she almost immediately bonded with the youngest, SJ.  To be honest, he was the real reason we decided to get another dog.  There is absolutely no way we could have found a more perfect dog for our family.  That is not to say that we didn't have some issues.  Miss Cosmo had some serious anxiety issues in the beginning and chewed all kinds of strange things.  Her favorite thing to chew was shoes and flip flops!  We lost many shoes in the beginning but eventually she grew more comfortable with us and her anxieties soon began to disappear.

If you are thinking of adding a pet to your family, I urge you to stop out to your local shelter to see what they have.  I never in a million years expected to see a full bred pug out there so they can have full bred dogs.  We are so glad we brought Cosmo into our family, she brings a great deal of love and affection.
