Using What You Already Have Decorating

How many out there are like me?  When you think of redecorating or changing decorations in your home you think you need to go out and purchase something new?  You think to get the look you want that you need to go out into the world and find the perfect decorations.  Honestly that is my gut instinct- I want a change so something new must be had.  I have been trying to change my way of thinking and have been trying to search through my home first for some changes instead of buying something new to me.  I am trying to think outside the box.

My dream as an adult has always been to have a fireplace with a mantle in our home.  None of the homes we bought or built ever had one though until our current home.  But the fireplace in our current home isn't what I had envisioned.  It is a gas fireplace that is right smack in the middle of our living room.  It is open on both sides and had no mantle at all when we moved in.  What a disappointment!

Thankfully after a couple of years I was able to talk my hubby into putting a shelf up on one side of the fireplace for a makeshift mantle.  I have been enjoying the task of decorating it for the holidays but the rest of the time it is pretty simple and bare.  That is until this weekend!   The part of the living room that has the mantle is technically my office.  If you can call it that.  It is mostly a walk through from the bedroom hallway to the kitchen.  I moved my desk into here about a year ago and have slowly been turning it more into an area for me.  I have added some chairs for reading (to go along with my bookshelves) but it still is a work in progress.

All last week I kept looking at the relatively bare mantle (all I had on it was a clear glass vase with some dried flowers in it- blah) and wondering what to do.  Then Sunday I was tired of looking at it and went in search of something new.  This what I came up with:
Yep those are my kiddos in there too.  I think the mantle has kind of an old country feel to it with the lace and milk glass.  I took the candy dish and plate from my hutch and the vases from under the sink.  I really like the look of it for early summer!

Here is a little bit closer look:

So what do you think?  The cost for this updated decorating?  Nothing!

Thanks for stopping by the hill for a visit.  I hope you stop by again soon.
