Thunderstorms

Thankfully this year hasn't been too terribly dry for our garden.  We have had to water a few times but the plants really and truly love a good rain.  The plants always thrive after a good rain- especially if we get some sun afterwards!  That has been the difficult part this year- getting the sun.  We have had such a strange spring and so far summer with temperatures going up, up up and then dropping way down.  We have gone from 90 degrees and high humidity to 59 degrees and cloudy.  We can't seem to get those glorious in between days with the beautiful blue skies and white puffy clouds with temperatures in the high 70's or low 80's.  That is what the garden really needs.

But for now I am content to sit inside, listen to the thunder rumble and cuddle with the dogs (who hate a good thunderstorm).  Happy Thunderstorms to you.

Busy Spring

Wow where does the time go?  Between all the spring sports, the end of the school year and finally being able to do outside work, time got away from me and I haven't been posting my progress!

The spring was so wet this year that we were not able to do everything we wanted to in the garden.  We had hoped to get the rest of the grass out of the garden.  We put a fence around it last year and left some room to expand.  We wanted to have the entire area ready to plant but it just did not happen!  Oh well there is always next year.

We did plant the rest of the garden.  The radishes, lettuce and peas did not do so well.  There were several spotty areas in the radishes so I think I shall plant some more when the current crop is done.  I planted more  peas and a few more came up- so upsetting!  But we shall be happy with what we can get out of it.  Next year I think it calls for a big truck load of manure!  We tried just bags this year but I don't think it was enough.

So far we have had some radishes out of the garden- yum!  It is so nice to have something fresh straight from the garden.  I did pick some green onions last night that we have yet to try.  They sure smelled very oniony so hopefully they will be good.  It looks like we could probably pick a bit of swiss chard here soon too.  Yeah!  Love getting fresh stuff from the garden.

A few other projects I have completed so far this summer-- I patched our quilt that we have on our bed.  Our dog Cosmo decided to put some holes in it.  I added some color with the patches and I think it looks good.  I have also made some gardening soap.  I made some with glycerin with poppy seeds with lemon grass scent.  I put a hole into it and hung it from the water spout outside.  Not sure how long it will last hanging out there but it sure is nice having it there.  I also made some with regular soap and cornmeal.  It was shaped around a rope but has to dry for 2 weeks, so I haven't been able to try that yet.  Oh and I have 2 batches of lavender vinegar going- how I missed that!  It makes cleaning so much more enjoyable!
